The Antonine Wall, of Roman history runs right from the east coast
(Grangemouth/ Bo'ness) to the west on the banks of the River Clyde at
Bowling. It is fantastic to actually see the remnants and a great thing to
explore, along many of the accessible parts of it's length.
Not anything like as spectacular as Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland
(Wallsend, Newcastle) and over to Bowness-on-Solway (past Carlisle in the
west), but a real statement of power and great engineering
nonetheless...... The Forth and Clyde canal follows the 'route' quite
closely and shows the masterful way of using the topography of the land for
wall and waterway.

Whilst 'boundaries for defence', these walls were actually 'landmarks' and
the Roman occupation and trading areas stretched quite a way beyond, well up
into Perthshire and Tayside. Well worth exploring more detailed history on
the web.
