Birdoswald to Gilsland on Hadrian's Wall Feb 08
had a good trek before a refreshing pint and luncheon and return the same
way.
Picked up a few wee interesting things. One to note for me was the often
recalled story of the wall being used for developments over the millennia
and where I got close or abutting walls I did seem to note that then shapes
and colours of the stones were very close. I think, not rocket-science, to
believe that one ancient structure being ''creatively used''... for 'more
modern needs'...and who wants to quarry, pay for, and carry all that huge
need for stones from afar, when it's there on the doorstep of the farm or
village'...!?).
We have to wonder and respect the might of the Roman Empire. The Wall was a
huge achievement so long ago, and by comparison, nearer to home here in
Torrance, Antonine's Wall was a degree of latitude too high for ease of
management and benefit. Although, there is lots of Roman archeology way up
towards Crieff and Dundee.
Worth a trawl on the web...?
